Designed for the MacRobertson Air Race of 1934, three examples of the De Havilland DH.88 Comet took part in the event from London to Melbourne with 'Grosvenor House', now preserved at the Shuttleworth Collection, winning the race in 71 hours.

The three entrants can are seen together in Stephen Chard's aviation art painting, these being G-ACSS 'Grosvenor House', G-ACSP 'Black Magic' and the un-named G-ACSR. winning the race in 71 hours.

A total of five DH.88 were produced and it had been thought that all but 'Grosvenor House' had been destroyed. However, after nearly forty years 'Black Magic' was re-discovered and is currently undergoing restoration in Derbyshire, U.K.
