One of the most important cars in the history of the automobile, the VW Beetle project was started at the behest of Adolf Hitler under the leadership of Dr. Ferdinand Porsche. Few Beetles were delivered before the outbreak of WWII, though the car was used during the war. Full production began in 1945 and only these vehicles are officially recognised by VW today. A total of 21 million Beetles would be built in both Germany and Mexico with a production span of some 65 years.
