The advent of airliners produced the first real competition to the railways in travelling to Scotland and on several occasions there were semi-official races over parts of the route between the locomotives of the LNER and the aircraft of Imperial Airways. This is the second of those meetings between the ‘up’ Flying Scotsman, being hauled by A1 Class 4472 Flying Scotsman itself and a Handley Page H.P.42.
