The
Douglas SBD Dauntless series of aircraft can lay claim to having been the
single most important type in the USA's war against Japan.
Seeing
service for most of the Pacific war, the "Slow But Deadly"
built a record of sinking more Japanese ships than any other in the inventory,
including the carriers Akagi, Kaga, Soryu and Hiryu at the Battle of Midway in
1942.
This limited edition print shows an aircraft of VB-16 flying from the USS Lexington during the Battle of Tarawa in November 1943.
