Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress Aviation Art Print Regensburg mission by Airplane Charles J. Thompson GAvA

With heavy losses being suffered to German fighters it became essential to find ways of reducing the risks to pilots and aircraft. For the large summer raids of 1943 it was decided that a number of aircraft from certain missions would go on to North Africa rather than running the gauntlet twice. Here B-17’s of the 4th Bombardment Wing fly over the Alps after the attack on Regensburg. Bomber losses would not be suitably addressed until the introduction of the P-51 Mustang.
