His family background is full of artistic and engineering talent, and it was with the help of his artistically gifted Aunt that Richard first became engrossed with the world of painting.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLargely self-taught, he was regarded as a gifted art student at school but was encouraged by his parents to train for a ‘proper job’ and subsequently followed a career in engineering. Through this period artistic ambitions remained, though purely as a spare time hobby. From the age of around ten, Richard started taking an interest in motor racing and aviation and following visits to air shows and motor racing events it was inevitable that this interest would be transferred into his early drawing and painting efforts. Much later it was undoubtedly the combination of Richard’s engineering and artistic talents that were to prove pivotal in his artistic career. This particular car was driven to second place at Le Mans in 1959 by Maurice Trintignant and Paul Frere, the winning car that year being the sister car driven by Roy Salvadori and Carroll Shelby.\u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e \u003c\/p\u003e\r\n\u003cp\u003e 2013 is the centenary year for Aston Martin and there have been many celebration events held throughout the summer. I had the chance to visit The Aston Martin Heritage Trust housed in a beautifully restored timber-framed barn in Drayton St Leonard, Oxfordshire, earlier this year. This car was displayed alongside some of the drawing office artefacts from the old Aston Martin factory. Siffert had been the fastest driver all weekend and was driving hard recovering from a poor start from pole position.
