Anthony Cowland FGAvA
Born in Sussex, Anthony spent his childhood in Barbados and Singapore before returning to the UK. A Graduate of Brighton School of Art he spent over a decade in Design and Architecture, becoming a Director in a large London/New York based Architectural and Design practice. He turned to full-time Illustration and Painting in 1989.
Anthony is a past Chairman of the Guild of Aviation Artists; of which he is now a Fellow and Medal holder. He is also a Member of the Chartered Society of Designers. He paints Maritime subjects under his middle names of ‘Richard Grenville’. He has won Design Awards together with over a dozen Painting Awards in UK and USA. He has organised a number of Exhibitions and sat on numerous selection panels in London.
Over the past two decades he has been heavily involved with painting for the British Forces with visits to major International Exercises, Peace-keeping Zones and Theatres of War; often ‘roughing it’ on location. He has also painted a number of ceremonial works and official portraits and is proud to have been elected be as a member of the QOGLR Association (Ghurkhas).
Anthony has flown in over 40 types of aircraft including balloons, gliders, helicopters and various military types. His flying experiences have given him an opportunity to collect many air-to-ground and cloudscape references, (essential to any ‘aviation artist’).
