  • A Welcome on the North West Frontier - Pakistan International Airlines DC-3

Douglas DC-3 Pakistan International Airlines Limited Edition Photograph - by Aviation Photographer John Stroud

As Europe began to enjoy the concept of holiday package tours in the early 1960s there were still places in the world virtually untouched by air travel.

Chitral was one such place.  Deep in a valley and surrounded by mountains Chitral was a key town on the North West Frontier of Pakistan and, as such, was in need of regular supply and communications with the rest of the country. Road travel was dangerous not just because of the terrain but because it was along the tense Afghan border. The job was given to Pakistan's national airline.

Pakistan International Airlines decided to start a twice-weekly service in February 1962.  Starting at Rawalpindi and staging through Peshawar it was not a long flight and the Douglas DC-3s chosen to undertake the service were the perfect choice.  'Flying the hump' in World War II, resupplying the Chinese and Americans from India, meant flying over 15,000 foot peaks in the Eastern Himalayas, a task assigned successfully to the C-47s and Dakotas of the USAAF and RAF.

Now that aircraft was given the task of proving the service was feasible...just one week before it was due to start. Photographer John Stroud took his place on PIA DC-3 AP-AJT and documented not only the hazardous journey flying over the 10,800ft Lowari Pass and into the Chitral valley but the great welcome from the Chitralis.

The image shows a crowd of around 300 Chitralis fascinated not only by the aircraft but by John's camera against a spectacular North West Frontier backdrop

Two sizes are available. The 14" image is limited to 30 copies, while the 22" version is limited to 20 copies
