Fiat G.55 Centauro Airplane Aviation Art Limited Edition Print - Italian ANR by Aviation Artist Darryl Legg
With the Macchi MC.200, Reggiane 2001 and Fiat G.50 proving inadequate in combat, Italian designers began to look at ways of improving their aircraft. Licence-production of the famous Daimler-Benz DB601 engine gave the designers an engine with which to work and both Reggiane and Macchi produced much-improved second-generation fighters (RE.2002 and MC.202). Fiat would not produce a second-generation machine, instead offering a new aircraft using the DB605 engine that would also go on to power the Macchi MC.205 and Reggiane 2005. Fiat's new aircraft was the G.55, named Centauro (Centaur).
Entering service in 1943 and used, in the main, by the Nationalist ANR, the G.55 was found to be a potent high-altitude fighter capable of entering combat with the best Allied fighter of the time and also of bringing down Allied bombers due to its heavy armament of three 20mm cannon and a pair of 12.7mm machine guns.
