  • Beside the River Exe - 6029 King Henry VIII

King Class Locomotive Great Western Railway Art Print by Artist Stuart Booth

Originally named King Stephen, 6029 had been renamed King Henry VIII in 1936. A Plymouth engine for much of its life, 6029 would serve as the main engine on the Cornish Riviera Express on numerous occasions. The locomotive is seen here some time prior to 1957, when it received a double chimney.

Though 6029 would be scrapped in 1962, three members of the 'King' class were preserved, 6000 King George V straight from service, while 6023 King Edward II and 6024 King Edward I were both saved from Woodhams Scrapyard at Barry.
