  • Scandinavian Sealand - Short Sealand LN-SUH

Short Sealand Norway Limited Edition Photograph - by Aviation Photographer John Stroud

Now this is a rare aircraft.  It's a Short SB.7 Sealand, one of just 25 built by Short Bros and Harland in Belfast.  LN-SUH stared life as an SA.6, with a fixed undercarriage before being adapted for pure flying boat operations.

It was one of two operated by Vestlandske Luftfartselskap, commonly known as VLS or by the trading name of West Norway Airlines, and was based at Bergen airport in the Sandviken district.  The routes were from Bergen either to Trondheim or Stavanger and took in many of the more remote towns on the west coast of Norway.

On 11 June 1956 renowned photo-journalist John Stroud arrived in Stavanger from Hatfield on the delivery flight of West Norway's new DH Heron 2, LN-BDS. Never one to miss an opportunity he spent the next five days flying in the airline's aircraft. He tried out the Republic Seabees being flown around by famed Norwegian wartime Spitfire pilot and airline founder, Soren Liby. He also got the rare chance to fly in one of their Sealands from Stavanger to Haugesund, a memorable trip of just 21 minutes. His pilot was yet another great wartime flyer, Dag Krohn, who had flown Gloster Gladiators in the war of 1940.F.

John's image is a fabulous tribute to one of Short Bros' great flying boats

Two sizes are available. The 14" image is limited to 30 copies, while the 22" version is limited to 20 copies
