Atlantic Convoy- HMS Royal Sovereign
HMS Royal Sovereign Royal Navy R Class Battleship Maritime Naval Art Painting Print by Artist Roger H. Middlebrook GAvA
Unlike the ships of the Queen Elizabeth class, modernisation of the ‘R’ class battleships has only got about half way through by the time war came along in 1939. Due to this and their slower speed HMS Royal Sovereign and her sister ships were placed on convoy protection duty. In this role they proved highly successful, the presence of just one ‘R’ being enough to deter the raiders Scharnhorst and Gneisenau on several occasions.
