With distinctive black-painted engine cowling and wheel covers, the Sopwith Triplane’s of 10 Naval Squadrons ‘Black Flight’ were some of the first celebrated British pilots of WWI with all five pilots going on to have considerable success. While the most famous is undoubtedly Raymond Collishaw with his Black Maria, this is ‘Black Roger’, flown by E V Reid who recorded 16 victories in it. All Canadians, the flight scored an incredible 87 victories between them in just under three months.

This piece of WW1 aviation art by Roger H. Middlebrook shows the close-quarters nature of many of the dogfights over the western front.
