Fit For A King - Royal Train 1939

£2,850.00

Original Oil Painting of "Fit for a King", Canadian Pacific Royal Train of 1939 with Hudson class 2850 at its head by Artist Roger H. Middlebrook GAvA

The Royal Tour of Canada in 1939 by King George VI and Queen Elizabeth is considered to be one of the most successful of its type ever. Not only did the couple manage to visit every Canadian province but also took a short trip into the United States, the first time a reigning monarch had done so since independence.

While in Canada the couple were transported in two specially fitted out Royal Trains, one of the Canadian National Railway and the other, seen here, of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The locomotives were turned out in a Royal Blue and silver scheme somewhat different to the usual Maroon and silver colour of other CPR locomotives. The locomotive chosen was 2850 of the 4-6-4 Hudson class and after a superb spell of service on the trip of over 3000 miles, the CPR applied to Buckingham Palace to be allowed to rename the class as the "Royal Hudsons", a request that was granted. Subsequently all 45 members of the class were permitted to be fitted with small crowns on each running board.

This newly commissioned piece by Roger H. Middlebrook has been painstakingly researched to get the closest colour accuracy yet of any colour image of the train. We are indebted to Todd Schannuth for his help in the research for the painting.

This is the original oil on canvas board painting from which our print is taken. It measures 30" x 20" and comes framed, varnished and ready to hang. Would potential buyers please contact us for a Buyers Pack.
