Although heard fleetingly during the Battle of France, the cry ‘Achtung, Spitfire’ became far more familiar to German crews during the Battle Of Britain. Meeting determined, well organised and most importantly well equipped resistance for the first time several German types were found wanting, none more so that the Junkers Ju-87 Stuka.

 

The Spitfire here is flown by Battle of Britain ace John Dundas, who would shoot down the highest scoring Luftwaffe pilot up to that point in the Battle, Helmut Wick before being shot down himself by Wick's wingman. Neither pilot survived.
