Yamaha 250cc 4- Cylinder Phil Read Japanese Racing motorcycle birthday card by John Hancox


One of the great racing motorcycle/ rider combinations, the Yamaha 250/4 and Phil Read were able to battle another great motorcycle/rider combination in the Honda 250/6 and Mike Hailwood during the 1967 season. Read had already secured the 250cc crown in 1964 and again in 1965 but teething problems with the new 4-cylinder meant that 1966 would belong to Honda and Hailwood. The 1967 season saw a continual battle between the two, being tied on points at the end of the year. Hailwood would retain the crown having won five. 1968 would see Read again riding the 250/4 and find new competition in team-mate Bill Ivy. Against Yamaha's wishes he fought Ivy for both the 125cc and 250cc crowns and won both
