The satellite air bases, dispersed away from the larger airfields became of vital importance during the Battle of Britain when the Luftwaffe attempted to deny the RAF any way of opposing their armadas. Small stations, such as Rochford in Essex could be made into a comfortable home for up to a full squadron at a time. On this occasion it is 54 squadron, normally based at Hornchurch.
