Stalwarts of British Rail for over fifty years, the class 20 was produced in very large numbers to replace earlier designs that had proven to be insufficient.
The locomotives have been upgraded over time
and the remaining locomotives are substantially different to the originals. Over
200 locomotives were built and over twenty have been preserved.
