Qantas Empire Airways bought 34 Lockheed Constellation's of various models with the L-0749 being the initial variant. This aircraft, Ross Smith was named after a WWI aviator who, along with his brother, later completed the first flight from England to Australia in 1919. The aircraft also allowed Qantas to develop a number of the routes used to this day.
