American Hero - Thomas 'Tommy' McGuire

Born in Ridgewood, NJ on August 1 1920,  Thomas 'Tommy' McGuire would become America's second highest scoring ace of the Second World War,  During his time in action, he flew five Lockheed P-38 Lightnings, all named "Pudgy". On 29 August 1943, during his 14th mission, McGuire was escorting B-24 Liberators over Wewak, New Guinea, when he claimed two enemy aircraft destroyed, the first being a Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa (“Peregrine Falcon”). The twin-engined Lightning, with its distinctive twin booms and heavy firepower, proved a superb long-range fighter in the Pacific and would be an instrumental weapon in the wrestling of the air war back in the favour of the Allies. McGuire’s tally would eventually reach thirty-eight aerial victories before his death on 7th January 1945, earning him the Medal of Honor and a lasting place among America’s most respected fighter pilots.
