just prior to Italy's 1943 armistice, the Fiat G.55 would go on to serve in the
Fascist ANR with a total of 274 being produced. The aircraft proved extremely
capable but as Allied air superiority grew so losses mounted, many aircraft
being destroyed on the ground.

Legg's superb painting shows an aircraft of 1st Gruppo, 3rd Squadrilia
operating in June 1944.
