Short Stirling 149 Squadron Aviation Art print by Stephen Chard GAvA

First of the RAF's four-engined bombers, the Short Stirling would be found to be the least capable, mostly due to the designs 99ft wingspan. This had been requested by the Air Ministry so the aircraft would fit inside the hangars of the time but had the effect of limiting the aircraft's service ceiling and increasing the likelihood of attack by nightfighters.

Despite this drawback, the aircraft would see considerable service in as both a bomber and a glider tug. This aircraft comes from 149 Squadron based at RAF Mildenhall
