Following on from the company's successful Boeing 247 airliner and the experimental XB-15, the B-17 first flew in 1935 and now holds a status among aircraft that few have achieved.
Gradually improved throughout its production life, the 'Flying Fort' gained the tail gunners position, ball-turret and the large dorsal fin with the E-model aircraft.
