Restoring the Balance - Spitfires over Burma

In the early stages of the Burma campaign, the Allied air forces suffered severe losses to the Japanese, whose fighters, particularly the agile Nakajima Ki-43 *Hayabusa* (“Peregrine Falcon”), outclassed the older Buffaloes, Mohawks and Hurricanes then in use. Air superiority was briefly lost, leaving ground forces vulnerable and morale shaken. The arrival of improved aircraft such as the Supermarine Spitfire Mk Vc began to redress the balance. With superior speed, climb, and firepower, the Spitfire allowed RAF and Commonwealth pilots to meet the Japanese on equal terms. From mid-1943 onward, these aircraft helped regain control of the skies over Burma, supporting the Allied advance toward victory in the East.

On Boxing Day, 1943, Bob Cross flying a Spitfire Mk Vc (MA388) of 136 Sqdn, claims one of two Ki-43's for the day. Cpl Yanagi flying a 3rd Chutai/204 Sentai Ki-43II, went down, possibly near Pekon Lake, Burma.
