Ploiesti Defender - The IAR 80/81

Developed in Romania during the late 1930s, the IAR.80 and its later variant, the IAR.81, were among the most capable domestically produced fighters of the Axis powers. Built by Industria Aeronautică Română, the sleek, radial-engined aircraft combined agility with impressive handling and was well-liked by its pilots. Initially comparable to early Hurricanes and Bf 109s, it saw extensive action on the Eastern Front and in the defence of Romania against Allied bombing raids. Despite being outclassed by later war designs, the IAR.80/81 remains a testament to Romanian engineering skill and determination under difficult wartime conditions.

The mid 1944 raids on the Ploiesti oil fields featured some of the last actions by the now outclassed IAR 80/81 fighter, and the type was withdrawn soon after
