Yakolev Yak-3 Fighter Aviation Art Limited Edition Print by Aviation Artist Darryl Legg
After
overcoming the initial shock of Hitler's surprise invasion in 1941, Russian
design bureaus set about delivering new types to the frontline quickly and in
ever increasing numbers.
The
Yak 1 had been under development prior to the invasion and by the end of 1941
500 aircraft were in service. Following this success the aircraft would go
through the Yak-7 and Yak-9 variants.
In
an attempt to wring the highest possible performance from the airframe, the
bureau began a redesign, reducing both weight and drag. This new aircraft,
christened Yak-3 was first encountered by the Germans during the Battle of
Kursk in 1943 and from then on the Yak-3 remained one of the best fighters
available to the USSR. In total over
37,000 Yak fighters were produced during WWII.
