The
final and much improved version of the very successful F9F family, the F9F-8
was so redesigned that it received the name Cougar.
While
only operating with front-line units for a short time before being superseded
by the F3H Demon, F8U Crusader and F11F Tiger, the Cougar
would have a somewhat longer role as a trainer in both its single and two-seat
configurations, the last two-seat aircraft not leaving service until 1974.
