North American P-51D Mustang Aviation Art Print by Darryl Legg

From RAF to USAAF - The 4th Fighter Group.

Returning to their base at Debden, England, in the final year of the war, P-51D Mustangs of the 4th Fighter Group cruise in loose formation, led by Colonel Everett Stewart in “Sunny VIII.” The 4th Fighter Group was formed in September 1942 from the RAF’s celebrated Eagle Squadrons - Nos. 71, 121 and 133 - composed of American volunteers who had fought before the United States entered the war. Initially flying the Spitfire Mk V, the Group later transitioned through the P-47 Thunderbolt and P-51B version of the Mustang before receiving the definitive P-51D. Operating as part of the U.S. Eighth Air Force, the 4th became its most successful fighter unit, with over 1000 enemy aircraft destroyed when ground and air kills are combined, the group proudly bearing the motto “Fourth but First.”
