Darryl Legg Aviation Art Print of Douglas TBD Devastator
"Torpecker" - The TBD Devastator
The Douglas TBD Devastator was the U.S. Navy’s first all-metal monoplane torpedo bomber and, at its introduction in 1937, represented the cutting edge of carrier aviation. Powered by a Pratt & Whitney R-1830 engine, it carried either a single torpedo or up to 1,000 lb of bombs. Though advanced for its day, the rapid progress in aviation meant that, by the outbreak of war in the Pacific, it was already obsolete. TBD-1 Devastators of Torpedo Squadron 6 (VT-6) from USS Enterprise took part in the early actions around Wake Island in 1942, but their vulnerability was exposed at Midway, where heavy losses led to their withdrawal from frontline service and replacement by the Grumman Avenger.
