Supermarine Spitfire Mk.V Aviation Art Print by Darryl Legg
When Legends Meet - Spitfire Mk.V vs Focke-Wulf Fw-190A
A Spitfire Mk.V from 340 (Free-French) Squadron is seen in combat with a Focke-Wulf Fw-190A from JG.2 during Operation Jubilee on 19 August 1942. This disastrous raid into northern France proved how difficult taking a port would be in the future invasion of the continent and set in motion the development of many technologies that would later be instrumental in the success of the Normandy landings; the Mulberry Harbours and "Hobart's Funnies" range of specialist armoured vehicles being just two.
The raid also proved the necessity of having air superiority, as the Spitfire Mk.V of Fighter Command was outclassed by the Focke-Wulf Fw-190, the latter being able to inflict considerable losses on both the bombers and escorts of the RAF during the operation.
