Darryl Legg Aviation Art Print portraying a Kawanishi H8K Emily

Maritime Marvel - The H8K Emily

As the H6K (Mavis) flying boat was entering service in 1938, Kawanishi moved on to the design of a much larger aircraft in response to an Imperial Japanese Navy requirement.

Dogged by initial problems with the aircraft's waterborne properties, the H8K did not enter service until February 1942, receiving the Allied code name of Emily.

With its initial teething problems behind it, this large and heavily armed aircraft would perform extremely well and is considered by many historians to have been the best long range maritime patrol aircraft of the period.

The H8K2, seen here, was the definitive version with improved engines, slightly revised armament and an increase in fuel capacity. 112 of this version were built
