Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat Aviation Art Print by Darryl Legg

Evenly Matched - Hellcat vs Shinden Kai

The two aircraft seen in this image can be seen as two classics of the late-war period. Both powerful, heavily armed and pugnacious in look, the Grumman F6F-5 Hellcat and Kawanishi N1K2 "George" were very evenly matched, pilot skill and tactical position normally being the deciding factor in the ensuing engagement. In this action, which took place on March 19, 1945, the Japanese  pilots of the 343rd Kokutai in their Shinden Kais may have the advantage of height but have not been able to get behind the F6F-5s of VBF-17, making this battle over the Bungo Straits, West of Shikoku Island a fairly equal one.
