Operating from Foggia, Italy the 82nd Fighter Group helped escort USAAF bombing raids of the Fifteenth Air Force into German held territory. The 82nd had been one of the first units to take the P-38 to war, landing in North Africa in 1943. Initially operating the P-38F and G models, the much improved P-38J arrived in 1944. "Gutterdammerung" was the aircraft of Lt. Harley Barnhart and served with the 95th Fighter Squadron.
