Resolute and dogged to the end, the men and women of the Australian and New Zealand armed forces have always committed themselves to whatever task was asked. There are numerous occasions in which these qualities were tested to the utmost with the defence of Milne Bay being one of them. Milne Bay is at the very tip of Papua and was the lynchpin to the Australian’s holding Port Moresby, one of the last stepping stones before Australia. The ability of two squadrons of P-40 to hold the attacking forces at bay played a massive role in the defence of the island and hence of Australia too.
