Darryl Legg Aviation Art Print of a North American F-86A Sabre
Into the Swept wing era - The F-86A
The North American F-86A Sabre marked a new era in U.S fighter design, introducing the swept wing that transformed the performance of this, and its Soviet equivalent, the MiG-15. Entering service with the U.S. Air Force in 1949, the F-86A was powered by a General Electric J47 engine and capable of speeds approaching 670 mph. Its superb handling and innovative design, combined with superior pilot training and experience gave it a decisive edge over early Soviet MiG-15s during the Korean War, establishing air superiority for United Nations forces. The Sabre’s clean lines and combat record made it one of the most iconic fighters of the jet age, setting the standard for a generation of Western interceptors to follow.
Completed in the artist's looser style, this F-86A comes from the 4th FIW and was flown by famed P-47 and F-86 ace 'Gabby' Gabreski.
