One of the finest nightfighter designs of WWII, the He 219 was initially shunned and despite first flying in November 1942 was held back in favour of the Junkers Ju 388 and Focke Wulf Ta 154.
The project was officially cancelled in May 1944 but pre-production aircraft had proven the aircraft's worth and a number of aircraft were subsequently delivered to frontline units in a wide number of variants. With a top speed of over 400mph, the aircraft proved a valuable asset in the nocturnal war and even gained a number of successes over the de Havilland Mosquito.
