Bristol Beaufighter Limited Edition Art Print by Darryl Legg
From Nightfighter to Torbeau - The Bristol Beaufighter in Coastal Command
Originally conceived as a heavy fighter, the Bristol Beaufighter found its finest hour with RAF Coastal Command. Rugged, fast, and heavily armed, it became a fearsome strike aircraft against Axis shipping and U-boats. Later equipped with radar and capable of carrying torpedoes or rockets, the Beaufighter excelled in low-level attacks over the unforgiving seas of the Atlantic, North Sea and Mediterranean. Crews respected its strength and reliability, often referring to it affectionately as the “Beau.” From 1941 onward, Coastal Command Beaufighters played a vital role in securing Allied maritime supremacy, earning a lasting reputation as one of the most effective and versatile aircraft of the war.
Darryl's print shows Royal Australian Air Force Beaufighters of 455 Squadron over the North Sea, 1944.
