B-24D Assembly Ship Aviation Art Print by Darryl Legg
A New use for the weary - The Assembly Ships
As the Eighth Air Force built up its strength through the end of 1942 and into 1943, it became apparent to its commanders that the number of aircraft in the sky at any one time could lead to unfortunate accidents and aircraft joining the wrong groups. Their answer to this problem was the Assembly Ship system. In this, an older aircraft would be repainted in a gawdy paint scheme to denote each group and act as a formation leader until the groups on that day's sortie had linked up. With this achieved and the bombers safely on their way, the Assembly Ships would return to base.
Darryl Legg's Aviation art Print shows B-24D Liberator 'Pete the POM Inspector' the Lead Assembly Ship of the 790th Bomber Squadron, 467th Bomber Group flying from RAF Rackheath in 1944
