Avro Lancaster Aviation Art Print by Darryl Legg

Commemorating A Legend - The Avro Lancaster

'Phantom Of The Ruhr', an Avro Lancaster (EE139) of RAF 550 Sqdn along with other Lancasters are seen on the Mannheim Raid on 23/24 September, 1943.

Over 7000 Lancasters would be built during WWII, gradually becoming Bomber Command's main instrument in the night raids against German targets from 1942 onwards

Flying the Short Stirling, Handley-Page Halifax, de Havilland Mosquito, Vickers Wellington and a host of other aircraft, Bomber Command crews were asked to complete a total of thirty operational sorties to finish their tour. Given the strength of German defences, this number seems almost impossible and the fact that some members of the Command returned for a second tour illustrates their bravery and commitment to duty
