Short Stirling aviation Art Print by Darryl Legg
First of the Heavies - The Short Stirling
The Short Stirling was the RAF’s first operational four-engined heavy bomber, with its first sorties occuring in February 1941. Though limited in altitude and range compared with the later Halifax and Lancaster, it was a vital step in Britain’s strategic bombing campaign. Stirlings flew thousands of sorties with Bomber Command, carrying bomb loads over occupied Europe before being reassigned to mine-laying and glider-towing duties. Rugged and reliable, the Stirling served with distinction until 1945, its crews paving the way for the more advanced heavy bombers that followed.
A 90 Sqn Stirling, BK664, is seen on a 'gardening' mine laying mission to the Dutch Frisian Islands on the night of the 5th Feb. 1943.
