A Very Welcome Sight - The Douglas Skyraider

A hangover from the piston-engine era, the Douglas A-1E Skyraider was still proving its worth long after jets had taken over the majority of duties. In Vietnam, the United States Air Force used the “Sandy” in the vital role of rescue escort (RESCORT), protecting downed airmen and the helicopters sent to retrieve them. Its heavy armour, long loiter time, and ability to carry a vast load of weapons made it perfectly suited to the task. Flying low and often under intense fire, Skyraider pilots displayed remarkable courage. The rugged “Spad,” as it was also known, became a legend of the war - an enduring symbol of bravery, endurance, and dedication to comrades in peril.
