McDonnell Douglas Phantom FGR.2 17 Squadron Aviation Art Print by Chris French FGAvA
A pair of FGR2 Phantoms of 17 Squadron RAF depart Brüggen, Germany in the early 1970s. 17 Squadron was formed in 1915 and distinguished itself as a fighter squadron during WWII. During the cold war the squadron carried out photo reconnaissance and ground attack duties, the latter with the Phantom and subsequent Sepecat Jaguar. The UK version of the famous McDonnell Douglas jet was powered by Rolls Royce Spey engines which required significant modification of the fuselage compared to the original US design.
The squadron motto is Excellere contende (Strive to excel)
