Armstrong Whitworth Meteor NF.13 39 Squadron Aviation Art Print Painting by Artist Chris French FGAvA

The night fighter variants of the venerable Gloster Meteor were designed by Armstrong Whitworth and built at their Baginton plant near Coventry. The aircraft gave the RAF a far superior night fighter to the increasingly obsolete piston-engined aircraft used up to that point and remained in service until the early 1960s. These aircraft are AW Meteor NF13s of 39 Sqn operating from Kabrit in 1953. These aircraft had just replaced the Squadron's De Havilland Mosquito NF36s and had a cockpit cooling system, highly necessary when it is considered that cockpit temperatures in the Mosquitoes could reach 70c in those climates!
