One of the memories many pilots from WWII held was that of boredom waiting for the call to action. Pilots at dispersal could be waiting for a call to intercept raiders, mount a ground strike or simply to destroy an errant barrage balloon. Reading, Cards and sports helped to pass the time a little but the fear and apprehension was never far away.
