Darryl Legg Aviation Art Print portraying a Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero over Pearl Harbor
Sword of the Samurai - The Early Zero
The Mitsubishi A6M2 Zero was the most formidable carrier-based fighter at the outset of the Pacific War. Agile, long-ranged, and beautifully balanced, it dominated early aerial combat across the Pacific. On 7 December 1941, Zeros from the 2nd Carrier Division’s IJN Hiryu and IJN Soryu provided top cover for the Japanese strike force attacking Pearl Harbour. Engaging American fighters and strafing airfields, they helped secure air superiority during the devastating assault and helped to ensure almost total Japanese victory on that infamous day. Piloted by some of the finest aviators in the world, the Zero symbolised Japan's naval power at its zenith.
