Land Army Fordson Tractor and Supermarine Spitfire Blank Birthday Fathers Day Card by Artist Malcolm Root FGRA
As an island nation, Britain’s isolation could have been its downfall during both WWI and WWII as German naval blockade could result in a shortage of food and raw materials. Accordingly, major ideas were implemented with new farming land being brought into use and the populace encouraged to grow their own food. Both ideas proved very successful, but it was soon felt that mechanisation could help still further and a much higher number of tractors and other machines were brought into use by 1942.
In addition to this, WWII saw many cultural changes and an immense number of women entering the work force and services. Farm work was a very important part of this shift, and the Land Army would swell to over 80,000 members at its peak, with over 200,000 having served by the time of its disbandment in 1950.
In Malcolm Root FGRA’s Battle of Britain Farming Birthday Card the Women’s Land Army, A Ferguson tractor and Spitfire can be seen together, giving support to one another through a dark period in Britain’s modern history
