Railway Christmas Xmas Card featuring a Class 42 'Warship' by Neville Robinson

When diesel traction was brought on to Britain's railways there were a number ofd classes that tried different methods of converting diesel power into traction. Most common was the use of electric motors but the Class 42 'Warship' used hydraulics instead. The nickname of Warship came to being due to the names given to members of the class, all being named after famous ships of the Royal Navy.

Decent locomotives they were, however, quickly outmoded and ironically classed as non-standard by newere, more powerful designs and they were retired by 1972.
