English Electric Lightning F.6 XS904 being attended by pilots and ground crew.

First entering service in 1960, the Lightning went on to equip RAF squadrons for 28 years. Its immense power and rapid rate of climb made it the ideal point interceptor and for most of the Cold War it formed the backbone of the UK's QRA (Quick Reaction Alert) unit. The Lighting is probably best known as the aircraft that would intercept Soviet aircraft approaching UK air space, usually the Tu-95 'Bear'.
