In a bid to bring World War Two to a close the Allied forces adopted the new and contentious strategy of "Terror Bombing", the deliberate targeting of civilian areas in German cities. As Germany's capital and Nazi headquarters it was always going to be high on the list of targets and a concentrated attack from the air by the British and Americans combined with an overwhelming ground attack by the Soviets led to the near utter destruction of the once great city.
