The Braintree Branch in Essex spurs off from Witham on the main line from Liverpool Street to Norwich. The line was originally built extending all the way to Stansted and serving Dunmow, Rayne and Felsted along the way. This extra part of the line was closed to passengers in the 1950s, with the line now severed at Braintree. The advantages of re-instating the line to Stansted are all too obvious, but, while there have been several proposals to do just this, growth of the town probably makes this daunting, if not impossible.
